Khiva dates back to the Antique period at the end of the 5th century BCE. Ancient Khiva is considered to have been one of a system of border fortresses defending the southern boundaries of ancient Khorezm. The Khanate of Khiva was established in 1511 by nomadic Uzbeks and survived until 1920. At the end of the 16th century Khiva became the capital of the Khanate. During the late 19th century tension grew between Russia and Khiva. After a number of military expeditions, Khiva became a Russian protectorate in 1887, but continued to exit largely independently until 1920 when the last Khan abdicated and the Khanate was proclaimed the Khorezm People’s Soviet Republic (V.N.Yagodin & A.V.G.Betts (2006) Ancient Khorezm, UNESCO) br Moreover, Khiva is a mystical city, a tangle of clay buildings and twisting lanes encircled by a strong defensive wall. The city’s core is a fortification known as Ichan-Kala, which has sheltered thousands of people in a medieval city for ages. There are other notable structures, including Kalta-Minor, a fat and short tower adorned with beautiful blue tiles, and Juma Mosque, whose ceiling is supported by 213 carved wooden columns of various styles. But perhaps the best reason to see Khiva is to simply enjoy the city as a whole. Khiva retains its medieval air, despite the fact that people continue to live within its walls.
Our guide may give you recommendations about our local meals, restaurants, Traditional Folklore Dancing shows, Master Classes and other ceremonies currently going on Khiva. It is recommended not to miss your chance to walk on the walls (from the stairs located at the north Gate) and climb watch tower (in the Kunye Ark Palace) to see the sunset from the highest point of the town.
